The dancer stood on the stage

Pink leotard, pink slippers, pink ribbon, blonde hair

It was dark and empty in the hall

The red soft seats barren of an audience

A lone light shone above her center stage

Curtains open

She started gliding gracefully across the floor

Her rhythmic moves were perfectly in tune

To the music not in the hall

But in her mind

The moves told a story

Her arching body and heavy arms

Transformed her into a black bird

Trapped in a world of pain

She leapt high and fell swirling in elegance and grace

The bird tried to escape but could not fly

Her dancing was tired and sorrowed

The bird’s life was frustrated and sad

She jumped and strained

Hitting every note

Landing every step

Getting faster and more violent

The bird knew how to escape

She spun and rolled through the air and ground

The bird thrashed in chaos and pain

She spun and arched

The bird knew

Faster, angrier

To escape it must

Cut and rip

Faster, angrier

Its glorious wings

Faster, angrier

And then

She threw out her arms and leapt through the air

It can fly away

She stood center stage

The red soft seats barren of an audience

A dim light above her

She stood panting, out of breath

Sweat dripping, exhausted from the violent display

She curtsied
